I'll admit now that Liebling was *slightly* less impressed - as a former Oxford student herself she is quite attuned to films and telly that portray Oxford students as pretty much 90% toffs and 10% geeks and it does play up to that a bit.
However, having taken youngest on a few visits to Oxford back when he was looking at Unis, I'd say Saltburn depicts one type of Oxford college - some were clearly more public school than others. There was one we steered clear of where all the current students doing the greeting were wearing matching stripey blazers and straw boaters.

Went to see Ferrari yesterday afternoon. I’m a big F1 fan, or at least was back in the late 80s and 90s, and Ferrari was my team. This is set before that period, and I was hoping the film would be more about the cars, but it was mainly about Ferrari’s personal life, although the car scenes and racing were great, depicting how dangerous the sport was back then. The cars looked great though, and I was intrigued if they were real, but the producers apparently went through a painstaking process of recreating the cars, except for a Maserati which is Nick Mason’s. They used the Caterham chassis, apparently, which was nice for me as I once built and ran a Caterham).
Probably seeing Wonka next week. I thought the trailer for Origin looked good.
On the walk back from the cinema, Storm Henk had caused trouble, by ripping a roof off of a hotel, and abruptly placing it on top of some cars parked in a small car park.

Also former Oxford student. I thought it was exaggerated but accurate.

Just back from Next Goal Wins.
Good harmless fun. And an unexpected appearance by Elisabeth Moss, too. Had t realised she was in it.

Just back from seeing One Life. It's a very timely film as our Nation's attitude to refugees (and the reasons that causes people to become refugees) is very much in the news. Current news articles say that official attitudes to Winton and what he was doing at the time were far less supportive than portrayed in the film. Anthony Hopkins is excellent in the main role, a modest man who achieved so much but is racked by guilt about the many he could not save. I remember watching the That's Life TV programme recreated in the film when I was a child, that programme was required Sunday night TV in my mum and dad's house.

Slight cheat but I'm just back from seeing Dear England at the theatre. It's got a limited cinema run through NT Live starting 25th Jan. Go and see it. It's brilliant. I took Billy, who doesn't even like football. It's about being English.

We watched Saltburn last night, and I rather enjoyed it. I liked the way it started out as a familiar coming of age story about a grammar school boy going up to Oxford which then transitioned into something quite different. It felt to me like it went from Brideshead Revisited to Vile Bodies.
There were a couple of very hard to watch scenes. I’m not sure they were entirely necessary, but they were certainly memorable.
I disagree about there not being any likeable characters. I thought that both Felix and his father (played by Richard E. Grant) were sympathetic.
Also, despite knowing nothing about the film before watching, I guessed early on the truth about Ollie’s background.
It kept me watching throughout, which is rare these days.
