had a really rubbish run today, slow pace high HR, have been having rather a lot for my liking since the ashby 20 1.5weeks ago. I think part of it is that and part of it is the end of term tierdness, we finsih tommorrow then 3 weeks off.
this week is meant to be my last hard week before tapering. Do you think I should just continue with it as planned ie a 10mile run with intervals on thur or fri, a 5 mile recovery on the other day and the 22 on sunday or should I cut back this week as well. Physcologically I would find it hard to cut back this week but dont want to get onto that slippery slope downwards like I have done before.

hellen - don't cut back - just use your HRM sensibly as an indicator to how tired you are and don't fudge the boundaries. If you stick to just 70% runs now and just get the miles in you'll be fine. I would bin the speedwork.

Tried to do 11 miles at PMP today (8m/m), didnt quite manage it last 1.5 miles were slower than the rest, last mile is uphill and was running on empty by then. Just the perils of getting up at 5 for a run I guess. Still quite happy with 11 miles @8:10 at 75%.

4 miles at lunch time today and averaged 8:32mm for 76%. This is quite low for me at this pace and seemed really effortless. I put it down to running approx 7 hours after I have woken rather than half an hour and running 3 hours after a good meal rather than running on nothing. This run at 5am would have been over 80% for me and would probably have seemed far harder.

Of course the more rational explanation is I coudl run freely and effortlessly without Lums jabbering on at me!

Oh I see, better watch your back at FLM Joopsy, I'm a crack shot you know.

Great run though, I'd kill for that at present - did I say kill? Kill Kill Kill,

ahem sorry, tough day - might go and lie down now.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
