Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I just *know* that this has come up already a couple of times this year, but can I find the thread? Can I 'eck!

I now *need* a head torch for running. I don't need one I can attach to my cycle helmet as I have road-safety concerns regarding that practice, but I do need one that'll stay put for 10-15 miles and will illuminate the alleyways and footpaths that I use to keep off the roads. If it can be used at Thunder Run, so much the better.

I'm not a wealthy man, I've just spent stupid pounds on racing this month, but I don't need to limit myself to Poundland.

Any ideas?

Ive just got this one, good value with a red light on the back of the head as well in the battery pack which balances it all quite well

I have an Petzl XP2 and an Alpkit Gamma. The Petzl has slightly better build quality and I think slightly better light spread. The Alpkit is marginally brighter, but has a smaller light spread. The Alpkit is 1/4 of the price of the Petzl though.

However, I do some night orienteering and find that neither of these are bright enough for running through woodland looking for small features. I'm just about to get one of the H7Rs that DT linked to above. It seems highly rated by people in the know (well, the FRA forumites at least).

Jon - that Kathmandu one looks identical to the Alpkit Gamma, just with different straps. The battery pack and light look no different. Except that it's double the price of the Alpkit!
