I have some gripes with Garmin, too. In terms of acute load, I'm productive at the moment which isn't too surprising in marathon training. Still, Garmin currently refuses to up the ideal range further. It did that at the beginning of training but now it tells me that the long-term load is too high while my acute load (7 days), was even in recovery last week. I've put it back into productive with a race yesterday and an easy LR today. It totally ignored the recovery week.

It doesn't understand the principle of marathon training, that you increase load for 3 weeks and then have a cut-back week and then you do another 3 weeks block of increasing load now at a higher level before the next cut-back. Runalyze gets it, it tells me that my effective VO2max and my marathon readiness are both increasing so I just ignore Garmin and go with Runalyze. Recent race results confirm what I feel and what Runalyze recognizes: I'm getting fitter with time.

My predicted race times in Garmin are always out, 5k and 10k are too optimistic while the half and marathon are more realistic: 1:36 and 3:30. I'm training for a 3:30 marathon right now and I ran a 1:37:42 half last autumn. It doesn't understand the type of training I do - with marathon training, you wouldn't see a drastic improvement in 5k or 10k performances so those times are bonkers.

It knows that I ran a 47:14 min 10k at the end of January but still predicts a 42:47. Even with dedicated 10k training, it would be impossible to achieve that improvement in such a short time. I also ran a 22:39 5k time trial two weeks ago; yet it still insists that I could run 20:16 - bonkers! I'd need several training cycles dedicated to that distance to get there.

flanker HRV issues are covered by strained, unproductive is about VO2 Max going down with training load being right. See the link in my previous post.

Agree it's not necessarily the specific activity but the an activity can be the trigger.

I just read the article on VO2 max estimate. Garmin takes into account any activity, running, cycling or walking, that takes your HR over 70% of max for at least 10 or 15 minutes (depending on the watch you're using). So if you are still recovering from a hard session the previous day and your HR is relatively high for the easy pace you're running or walking, it gives you a worse rating.

I have a nice new shiny Forerunner 765 on my wrist. It seems to do an awful lot more than my 45 did!

Should say HRV is measured against your baseline as well rather than a population average.

In terms of VO2 swing from an activity when fatigued, it does have performance condition now so should swing less than it used to but it definitely can drop from that.

Of course, VO2 max isn't really what we're training to improve anyway and has been shown not to change much in well trained runners.

57.5 Days of Pain
I'm wondering what dodgy algorithm my Garmin uses for 'Body Battery'. It currently has me low every day despite resting most of the time and sleeping well. Seems to think I'm stressed most hours of the day which is the complete opposite of reality. RHR is raised but I can't see that any other measurements indicate stress.

It's odd, isn't it? I've done bugger all for 2 weeks after breaking my ankle, and yet my Body Battery has never got higher than 71. My sleeping hasn't been great with this cast on my foot, but every day in the late afternoon I get the same alert:

Easy day
You've had an easy day with plenty of relaxing moments. Consider doing some yoga, meditation or another light and relaxing activity to help improve your sleep quality.

Mine had me at -14 on performance condition yesterday! The race started onto a pebbled beach and I think performance condition is actually pace relatively to your 'normal' pace, but who knows with Garmin.

Performance condition is VO2 max percentage points below/ above your current rating.

I'm going to guess that based on the elevation and distance, you were quite a bit below what it expected. Garmin have apparently got an algorithm that takes into account terrain difficulty but not sure it works very well.
