I'd guess is the reason they don't support swimming HR is that it isn't as accurate as they'd like, and while "reasonable" is probably good enough for most people (anything better than nothing?) it'd get analysed and pilloried in the tech sports press, and it's just not worth the negative publicity.

Just look at what happens when a running watch doesn't get the HR accurate to the beat...

I have a 245 and get plausible results after swimming from my wrist HR. Hadn't thought to check the reading live.

However, it is very unreliable for measuring the distance. Reliably unreliable. I do a pretty slow but steady breaststroke, occasionally a bit faster. My last swim had three sections: 600, 350, 400m. According to the Garmin, those were 700, 580, 400m. Was that last section recorded correctly then? Nope, I had 100m splits ranging from 1:46 to 4:37.

I saw 3Ms come sailing in
Mrs3M's Vivoactive 3 regularly misses blocks of laps. Much to her annoyance, later!

To be fair it seems pretty good for counting lengths in the pool, and I do take the point about the inaccurate element being bad for publicity but it's a bit frustrating because I'd definitely be OK for swimming with "close enough".

Ah well. I'll just have to save some pennies for an upgrade.

Has anyone else's Garmin gone weird today? Cycled back from the parkrun cafe and noticed the GPS tracking is way out (it was fine 2 hours before cycling there!)

I had a brainwave to avoid the artefact of the watch dragging down my estimate of VO2 max due to so much running in the snow. I copied trail-running to a new activity and turned off VO2max recording for that activity.
