Mrs3M's Gamin Viviofit 3 does pool swimming fairly well, and she only does breaststroke.

It's a bit temperamental in almost every other way, though!

Outdoor swimming breastroke, I take the watch off and attach it to the back of the shoulder strap of my cossie - get pretty good distance data that way. The only other way is to deliberately stick arm up in air every 20 strokes or so.

Cheers. On my second swim, as it was shallow I stood up and walked out a bit, which was probably how i got some kid or reading. If I'm in the sea again, I shall stick my hand up periodically.

Unfortunately, that's just physics - water turns out to be quite good at blocking radio (and hence GPS) signals.

A friend of mine has a GPS widget that attaches to their goggle strap which seems to work pretty well - platysens.com
DC Rainmaker review of early sample: dcrainmaker.com

I don't do much OWS, so can't justify the price - I tend to stick my watch in my towfloat if I remember, which seems to work.

I find with pool swimming, my watch (Fenix 5X) is either very generous OR very stingy with laps, but rarely spot on.

For open water swimming the newer dual-GPS watches are much better. I only swim front crawl, but these are good examples

Here's an old swim trace from a 935, its all jagged lines

Compared to a 955 dual-GPS watch, which is so much smoother:

Is there anywhere on the garmin connect website to see the actual "training load" associated with each activity? My last 7 days have seen a rolling 40 mile week, which is about 10 higher than the week before. Yet garmin is telling me my training loads has decreased? Might this be because only some of the activities have taken place via the watch, and GC doesn't talk to the watch for activities (zwift treadmill runs) which are only uploaded to GC via .fit files?

Sigh
@larkim, you get an 'exercise load' for each activity with the newer watches.

The load page shows each activity.

Hmm, it doesn't on mine. FR645. Yet it does report "load" as one of the widget screens.

e.g. This was Monday, a 14.5mile run using the watch; no training load figure reported.

And this is a treadmill activity on Sunday where it was entirely recorded by Zwift and then .fit uploaded

Unless I'm looking in the wrong place here.

I can see where I've done a treadmill activity I now get a reported "exercise load" but think that is different from the "training load".

This is the 4 week summary where you can see the tm activities (blue bars on the graph), as well as below the "acute training load" which I think is the same as "training load".

I just don't think I can see anywhere the actual training load associated with each activity. Could be a limitation of my watch (or rather, Garmin's willingness to publish things from my watch - perhaps RunAlyze will make it visible as it used to for VO2Max on my old Vivoactive).
