Each workout element has an index number which the laps then refer back to so if there is any difference between those elements of the file you'd expect to see it there I suppose

That's what I was talking about when I mentioned workout step values; to be clear I was looking at the values in the lap messages and referencing them back to the workout step messages, and they are as I outlined above.
I did put it through fitfileviewer out of curiosity and it told me less than I already knew :)

Lol!

So the two files present differently in GC, but appear almost identical when viewed through a translation tool like the sdk or fitfileviewer?

Well yeah.
There are the same workout and workout step messages, the laps contain the same references back to the workout steps. GC (web) clearly knows that the recent one is a workout because it overlays the target paces onto the pace plot, though it shows the laps as Laps and not Intervals. GC Mobile similarly overlays the target paces on the graph, and in the lap list labels the laps by type (warm-up, run etc) but does not show the filter buttons that are present on the older workout. The target pace overlay isn't present on the older workout in either GCW or GCM.

At some point I'll try an exact repeat of something older to see how it shows up now.

Wow, I must say that I'm impressed at people jumping in this, thanks.

I'm due a threshold run tomorrow which I normally just run as a normal run but will set it up as a workout in case it was just a glitch

Correction there. It wasn't visible on the older workout because there was no target pace (it was the interval setup in the watch, which doesn't let you select a target pace, only distance/time/open for the overall target). Looking back at older workouts with target paces set, they do show the target pace overlay and they also show the buttons (mobile) or drop-down (web) for selecting the different phases of workouts, listing the laps as Intervals rather than just Laps.

Thanks for the sleep hints, Badger - got it working now, although I might turn it off again as all it does is tell me off and to go to be earlier

Oh and now I know those little buttons exist, they were still working for me when I put an ‘interval’ in yesterday’s run as a test

Wonders how much other useful stuff is hiding?
