Interesting HR aspect. I thought smart couldn't affect accuracy as it just reduces the data points stored, it doesn't reduce the "lock" onto the GPS transmissions?

Will experiment with it switched; I could see that if points A, B, C and D are in the places at which GPS is recorded, if they are in a straight line it only needs to record points A and D for storage purposes, but if either A or D are on the edge of accuracy, the additions of B and C might improve the overall trace reliability.

That's right, larkim, it always calculates the position every second, just doesn't write them all for smart. Garmin once mentioned that the GPS is so power light that you might actually see a tiny difference in battery life just from the consumption of writing the extra points and syncing them later, but it's not important.

@sam re ox saturation…. I dont use it at all, i just glance at it in the morning… i guess it’s a case of ‘it’s there and i would feel bad to switch it off’

"Garmin once mentioned that the GPS is so power light"

Yet in the power management modes it reduces sampling rate, so must have reasonable impact.

What, the GPS? As in standard versus ultra trac? I wasn’t suggesting it was negligible, it clearly isn’t when you compare non GPS with GPS activities, just that it no longer so massively dominates drain that other settings don’t really matter

Standard vs ultratrac is different to smart vs every second though isn't it?

(I tried ultratrac on some walks in the summer and it was garbage, the resulting trace was all over the place).

Yes, ultratrac drops the GPS lock then reacquires. I think suunto have a mode where it locks continuously but only computes position every 5 seconds, which saves not all that much power because keeping the satellite locks is a large chunk of it.

And don’t forget they can be charged on the run too.
