um
Or keep searching ... the original cable is bound to appear just after you've committed the £28 !

Or - try Garmin support / forums to see if anyone has a spare, or prepared to loan you one?

Hmm. The overview says 'works on land and water'. 'Track log: 2048 points, 10 saved tracks.'
From the manual that Um linked to, it looks as though tracks correspond to modern activities. I can't comment on the format of tracks, though. Others might be able to.

Well, that was a major update. Even had to delete older activities off the watch to make room for the software! All done now, just recharging for the morning.

The ExpertGPS software says it can save as GPX, but that is at least $33 (one year's subscription).

£28 + $33.... It all starts to look like a new unit might be cheaper in the end.
Here is a current handheld device, like the GPS 72:

It does use GPX.

yes, BS - that's what I was thinking!

Initially I'd hoped that I'd be able to use a data cable to download whatever routes dad had programmed into it, but a bit of a look around shows there are no maps stored on it any more (last date of contact with GPS was Nov 2010, which would have been his last trip to sell the boat down in Itchener) I don't think it's worth persuing, if it could use land maps, it's probably not much better than my watch!

If anyone has got a 245 and is wondering where the recovery HR has disappeared to, it's now a menu item before you save your workout.

@SPR, do you mean recovery time? I've done the latest software upgrade, and recovery time is still available as a sub-menu of training status too.

No not recovery time, recovery HR in 2 min. It used to pop up after 2 mins but now it doesn't. You need to go into the menu before saving your run to see it. It will be counting down if you go in before the 2 mins is up.
