Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Garmin 645. Just wondered why it sometimes does it, other times it does not. No big deal.

My Garmin 735 decided to update SW yesterday to v9.60
Really struggled to connect to pc, getting to the 'charge' screen and then just jamming.

But eventually it did.

After today's run, just the same, no connection & a jammed watch.
Spent 30 mins on 'chat' with Craig, who (a) was surprised, he didn't know 9.6 had been released and (b) persuaded me to do a 'restore defaults', assuring me it was only my personal details, not activities or settings that would be cleared.

Well - it got my watch connecting and working again, but has erased all my history.
I found 2 conflicting pages on garmin 735 support - one saying restore doesn't delete activity history, one saying it does.

Well, for me it did, but at least the watch seems to be working.
And luckily for me, Mrs Um did the run as well, so although I stopped a few times for photos, the route & time was the same. So I've copied her file and loaded manually.

Um, you're not alone, see this thread:
forums.garmin.com

one or two of the posts hint that the problem might come if you're using a non-standard watch face - which might make sense given that the firmware change was all about fixing security bugs in Connect IQ.

Thanks both - although form what I see, seems 9,6 has been withdrawn and Garmin Express shows 9.4 as the latest, not 9.6 or 9.7

Interestingly the UK support guy didn't see or know of v9.60

9.70 just popped up and installed. Although the watch jammed up again pre-install.

[ Badger - no added faces or any Connect IQ apps ... as long as it tracks time, distance, HR and downloads to Fetch, and has a battery for 6-8 hours, that's enough for me ]
[ well, until someone has am app that shows distance and direction to conquersize zone borders. But I guess if I was that bothered I could switch to grid reference things and know them. ]

Good afternoon Guys. Has anyone got any thoughts on or experience of the accuracy (or lack thereof) of the race predictor feature? Specifically on a 735xt?

I take it with a very large pinch of salt. I would be an extremely happy bunny if I got anywhere close to the predictions I get (both from an old FR405 and newer FR935)

Sigh
According to DC Rainmaker review for my FR245:

"In the same area that you found the Training Status in, you’ll see your current VO2Max. While this number frankly won’t change very much (and Garmin seems to have an odd infatuation with it lately), it does at least now account for heat/humidity. Meaning, if you go out and run on a really hot day, you won’t be penalized for it when it comes to why you were going slower with a higher heart rate.

Why might that matter? Well, VO2Max yardstick measuring aside, that number is combined with your gender and age to determine race predictor values. Previously, these were simple lookup tables with well known ‘best case scenarios’. This meant that you could theoretically throw down a solid 5KM time, yet not have the base miles for marathon. So while yes, your lungs have the potential to hit that marathon PR target, your legs certainly didn’t.

Now though, Garmin looks at your long runs and takes that into account. So if you haven’t been doing the mileage, then your marathon prediction times will account for that."

Hmmm...mine is predicting 5k in 21:34 (PB is 26:02 from 2019), 10k in 45:30 (PB is 54:36 from 2016), and half in 1:44:39 (PB is 2:18:40 from 2015). So I'm clearly slacking :-)
