Thanks all, I've come up with a workaround, almost by accident.
I normally use my Garmin 800 on my bike because the OS maps come in handy sometimes. I would switch it off while I was at work, then upload my commute via USB after getting home in the morning.
I've started using my Garmin Forerunner 45 instead. If I stop it when I get to work it automatically uploads the ride via Bluetooth on my phone and the bugs are recorded as squished. I then start it again before riding home. This means my commute gets recorded as two separate rides, instead of one longer one with a big pause in the middle, but that doesn't matter either way.
I'm swapping shifts from next week, but now I've got a system, I can adapt it to suit my new commute times.

I’ve finally figured out what I’m doing … current score -2657 😂😂 but I managed to squash 4 bugs today at least

Or if you stick with it your score will change quite quickly. It only counts the last 30 days so the big negatives fall off, I enjoy going from -3,000 odd to a positive score. I've done it several times now :-)

-3800 here.
Not been well enough to get the bugs out of the circle. It will all come good in the end :) They are so close together that I can carry 15 odd out at a time coome enough fitness to get out of the circle.

1) The scoreboard and markers don't 'reset' on the first of the month any more. They work on a rolling 30 day system.
2) You only need to worry about red bugs.
