Scribbler - this is 12 April per gov.uk: "Self-contained accommodation such as campsites and holiday lets, where indoor facilities are not shared with other households, can also reopen." So camping away from home on a completely self-contained basis presumably fits that category fine. Your "in a suitable spot" is fine. But formal campsites *may* be different: I think this means that campsites with washblocks/shower blocks should not be open then. (Taking the analogy of self-catering holiday accommodation, we are (currently, at least) expecting to be able to travel to a self-catering cottage we have booked in the second half of April, but my sister, who has a booking in a self-catering flat which has common external doors and a lift, has been told she cannot use it as it will only operate from 17 May.) |

the campsites are planning to open on 12th - but with the shower/loo blocks closed. some are allowing "self-sufficient" tents as well as vans, and some aren't |

Thanks Synge. We consider ourselves self-sufficient in our van. A bit smelly, maybe We'd only be looking at staying 1 night until later in the year. I hope you get your April holiday. |

We’ve got a roll-out awning that deploys along one side of the van and it’s a great feature. If you’re on a site it gives you just a fraction more territorial ownership. Not sure we’d ever use it wild camping, though. Moving on a step, I was really keen to get a side tent too, but it’s been embargo’d by Dr S who wants lots of light and air streaming in through the sliding door. (I have relented, mainly because I recognise it would need a fair bit of allocated storage space when not in use!) |

We have a drive away awning, actually we have two. Depends on what size you want- we have a small one for weekends and then a big 2 bedroom air awning for longer trips. winfieldsoutdoors.co.uk My advice would be get the best one you can afford st the time, we made the mistake of going for a cheaper one and then upgraded to the above last year. The first one was fine (it was an Olpro) but the one we have now is far superior quality wise. |

At the point you have a 4-berth "awning" (which is actually a tent), I feel like you’re back in the realm of car camping. At which point a decent estate car is often cheaper to buy than a camping van.

It doesn't have a heater, so that'll be the first thing I want in. What's better, diesel heater?
