Metered electricity would suit us too. We run a combination of gas and battery efficient items so that we can easily work off-grid when we want to; we should definitely pay less at camp sites.

My wife was involved with some organisation and tried to get local businesses/landowners/councils to allow overnight parking for campervans. It was like pulling teeth. There's a fear that it'll be abused whereas my experience in Spain is that the users are respectful of the rules. We stayed on a council run gated compound in Pamplona for 12 Euros. Electric was extra but we didn't need it. It was pristine. There were water and dump facilities. The town was less than a mile away. A fabulous facility. |

RunningRonnie even though I’m one of the big white van owners (but we don’t use a hair dryer 😉) I’m inclined to agree that the site fee system is unfair. I suspect however that due to the cost, there is little incentive for the site owners to upgrade the electric points to measure usage. Also the additional admin and delays involved when checking out (normally we just pop the gate key, if there is one, into a box and go). |

We’re in Spain now having taken 3 days to travel down from Calais. We stayed at 2 free aires and 1 CampingCar site (£13.70 with EHU) on the way down. Were in San Sebastián now and have met Sweetie for a coffee |

free night in a field tonight, at the workshop ( offgridpower.solutions if anyone is interested) should now have enough power to keep the van systems ticking over, run the tv and 12v chargers over for a week of rainy weather and more than we need really as unlikely to stay in one place that long. No inverter, didn't see the need, but we might change our minds later. |

I’ve never had much battery anxiety - perhaps I should… but most of the time we’re only off grid for a couple of nights at a time, and we are both very low 12v users with no TV or hairdryers. The battery ends up only being used for lights and things like ignition for the oven or the blowers for heating. I end up solo in the motorhome more often than not, so mostly end up on campsites for my own safety and peace of mind. Saying that, we’re just packing up now for a weekend in Scotland for a MTB race. Hook up at Tebay tonight, and then off grid in the event field tomorrow |

the battery in hours was as old as the van only 80Ah, and needed replacing soon anyway. OK in summer, but blowers on the heating and frost protection used too much for more than a night at a time.
