The great thing about the VW campervan is its relatively compact size. Access along single-track roads (and there are lots in Devon) is no more scary than with a car and the height issue has been mentioned.

The attraction of a larger vehicle would be having shower and WC within, also the greater living space. Maybe in a few years ...

It really is "each to their own". If there was only one ideal, then only one make and model would be made.
Our use of the motorhome has changed now we are both retired - before it was mostly a destress for me; weekends away with no inconvenience, so comfort trumped everything. Now we are free to go for longer road trips at the drop of a hat (especially when the snow appears in the Cairngorms!), using it more as a base for cycling and walking holidays and as long as there are basic facilities, we will have what we need and can get up close to more places.

Thats really helpful mrs shanksi. I think a bed would be all I need. Possibly something to do a wee in too! I was thinking of it for long weekends, about as long as I can manage without a shower anyway.

I can see a fridge and hob being useful, a sink too, but I suppose it also means more things to go wrong.

Not knowing the terminology I’ve just learnt that - I think - a rock and roll bed is one which folds out without needing stuff removed / unscrewed. I’m not very technical so that’s handy.

Lots of narrow roads where I live too Synge!

Synge that's what we love about the VW.

GM exactly, I think that's our issue, our use is changing and we are using a lot more and for longer stints at a time so want a bit more comfort. It is just the sleeping that is the issue .....

We mainly use ours for trips to the hills in Scotland so drive on lots of narrow roads too. We're booked to go to a campsite near Ulverston on Monday for two nights so will have access to proper toilets and showers. We chose to do that because our 13yo is coming with us and is not so keen on roughing it.

The rock n roll bed is great. And when it's put away there is a big space where we can have a table. The front passenger seat swivels round to face the back.

Parking at home too is another consideration. We can park the vw on our driveway. Couldn't fit a large motorhome there.

mrs shanksi, similar to ours by the sounds of it. When the bed is out, the dog sleeps under the foot of it and there is still plenty of space. When folded away, there is the table for board games etc, and the swivel chair was a must we felt, although it is only our passenger one that swivels.

We could've paid extra for the driver's seat to swivel as well but felt it wasn't needed as we probably won't have 4 of us staying in the van at the same time.

Yep we have the swivel seat to and it's very comfortable when the bed is up, to sit, eat, play games or watch TV

Our passenger seat in our N reg old T4 conversion slides off the front to be turned around. It’s a bit of a cumbersome thing but very useful when we are staying in one place for a decent amount of time!

We find our rock and roll bed very comfortable! We have a single duvet in a cover that we put down first then we have 2 all weather sleeping bags! In the summer we might only use one open over us! In the winter we get zipped into them!
