Was walking the dog with D1 this evening. Heard a distinctive call which I couldn’t place so I hauled out Merlin. Of course the distinctive call stopped! But then higher up just behind us was a nondescript call which Merlin immediately identified as a GS Woodpecker. We turned around, looked up and there it was on the side of the trunk!

New garden tick this morning. Bullfinch on the feeder, although it was so unexpected I initially dismissed it as a male chaff. It follows on from last week's first ever greenfinch.
Waiting for siskins now. Or maybe the waxwings will get here first

Plenty of swifts both this morning and yesterday morning. Though when I say plenty, that might be relative terms.

I think the jay has moved on. After a week or emptying the peanuts each day, we haven't seen it for 3 days now. Are they nomadic?

Not sure, um. I see plenty in the local woods but only very occasionally do they visit my garden.

Maybe not feeding youngsters anymore, so no need for the extra feeding

At the moment my bird feeder is being swamped by a massive number of fledglings. Great tits, blue tits, goldfinches, nuthatches and sparrows. At times there are dozens of birds all trying to find a space. It's wonderful to see!
