Looking out at the apple tree this afternoon. Over 5 minutes it had a rook, two magpies, a jackdaw and two hooded crows. Corvid central!

Not common over here are hooded crows. You're lucky

I am aware that they are less common in England than sometimes reported, DT😅
They are a very frequent sight here.

Apparently waxwings were spotted on the other side of Cambridge this afternoon. Fingers crossed

I was surprised when going for a little run (in miserable weather!) in rural Oxfordshire today to come upon a little flock of corn buntings. I got the best view of them I've ever had in this country, quite close to. I first identified them by the song (which was surprising considering it's December) and then spotted them flitting across the road in front of me and perching in some bushes nearby. They're not the most exciting bird to look at, but they're uncommon enough that I was thrilled.

Perching birds. Whenever I've seen them (not near home) they've been standing on fence posts or similiar

They were flying up from a field on my left across the road to perch in bushes on the right. Also groups of fieldfares flying over and lots of skylarks on the ground. Red kites galore, too.

Feeders were mobbed by goldfinches today. We get a lot in summer, but seems a flock is either passing through, or just arrived?

And a very soggy squirrel. But the washing line pole was too wet and slippery for it to climb up.

Anyone on here know much about gull behaviour? I've mentioned before about the peculiar changes in urban gull populations I've observed locally, where the most commonly seen gulls years back were herring gulls, and then black-headed gulls took over for a long time, and then in the last 2-3 years by far the largest population has been of lesser black-backed gulls.

Now, though, the LBBs have largely disappeared, I'm seeing very few. In fact there are seemingly fewer urban gulls around in general (as observed from flocks in the parks and school playing fields) and what gulls there are are mainly black-headed gulls again.

Anyone have an explanation for this?
