Often get gray wagtail on Chesterfield canal normal around the same stretch. On Saturdays run along the canal had a Widgeon in amongst the the Mallards at Turnerwood. First of the winter. Normally get a few mixed in with Teal on some marshland at the end of the canal near home.

Ooh waxwings spotted outside Northern Stage in the centre of Newcastle (they tweeted pics). Come out to the coast! Loads of berries here

I haven't seen them but apparently Hawfinches in Cromford today as well. We get 5 or 6 species of finches here depending on time of year so fingers crossed.

I've never seen a hawfinch. There's a site a few miles away from here that gets the odd visitor in winter

TheScribbler There have been lots of Waxwings in North Shields, Warkworth and Newbiggin in the last few weeks. Sadly I didn't get to see any of them. They have been as far inland as Gateshead / Dunston, I think, but still a fair way from me. |

jacdaw, interesting, didn't know that about grey wagtails. I've only ever seen them near water, I think. They normally favour fast flowing streams and rivers but I do occasionally see them by the more sluggish waterways of Norfolk.

Wild waxgoose chase this morning. Next door neighbour took some photos yesterday of waxwings in an urban street about half a mile away, where they had been for a couple of days apparently (without informing me). Went along there this morning but no sign.
