RooA, I imagine you saw this wagtail near a river or stream? They're beautiful birds, grey wagtails, and yes, the name doesn't do them justice at all.

They tend to move to lower ground in the winter (may even migrate properly), so you can see them in a much wider range of habitats, and sudden sharp snaps can definitely cause them to turn up anywhere, including towns and gardens.

J2R we have a small burn that starts life on the croft and a larger one the other side of next door. It was just hopping around with a couple of robins on the glacier that is currently where my driveway was.
I have seen one or two before and registered them as different but not had a close enough look to describe properly. I might even have asked before when I saw them but I can't remember!
