Thinking about it, it may have been the fact that it's rather later in the summer there, maybe the equivalent of our July, when birds are generally quieter and less visible.

Not quite the right thread but I briefly, very briefly, saw a baby adder today.

Then to restore balance the title, a very cunning curlew. Landed ahead of me on the track and continued to run ahead of me before flying back when I was clearly a safe distance away from its young.

We seem to have a spotted flycatcher in the garden most days at the moment. Doesn't seem to be feeding young, but they are late arrivals, so fingers crossed he has a wife on eggs somewhere near.

Some of the fun of Oyc tracking ...
- goes to pizza restaurant
- then flies from Edinburgh and Heathrow (via the airports)

Bit of a laugh really but on the other hand shows how scarce Swift's are in some localities: I saw my first and only four Swift's of the year yesterday. I've looked regularly over a 20 sq mile area whilst out running and these are all I've seen.

I saw the biggest party of swifts I’ve seen this year on Sunday morning - maybe 7 or 8 birds - above the platform at Haworth station

Saw a turnstone yesterday at the WWT at Caerlaverock. Smart little bird. A first for me.

We are getting parties of swifts over the house but not everyday like I would expect.
Birding highlight of the year so far is seeing that a little owl has nested under the roof of a house less than 5 minutes from our house. The dog may get bored of evening walks past that house or I may get an injunction 😁

Possibly agree about the swifts. We get them near work and every year they fly overhead.

First day I noticed them this year there were at least 9. Monday I know when I looked there weren’t any and yesterday at least 5 but didn’t hear them scream once all day.

I hadn’t thought much about the difference until now.
