We have a few swifts around this year, maybe more than the last couple of years.

The bird cherry ermine moth caterpillars are having a great year; lots of skeletonized bird cherries covered in halloween cobwebs. I saw a big party of LTTs this afternoon stuffing themselves on the caterpillars.

Definitely fewer swifts here this year. Alarming.

On the plus side, I have a chiffchaff and a blackcap singing away in gardens adjoining mine.

I've heard fewer willow warblers this year than ever before. Don't know why. Numbers have been dropping here for years, but this year seems exceptionally down.

Started off in early Spring with a good sprinkle of Willow Warblers down here around Cardiff but they soon moved on and they've been near enough absent along my routes ever since.
Another single Swift this morning. They'll be moving off soon too.

Fascinating evening last night. I went on a 'Nightjar' walk at Hatfield Moors NNR. And boy did it deliver. Lots of Nightjar calling (the NNRs in the area hold 5-10% of the UK breeding pairs) and three really good views. To keep us entertained the local Woodcock took it on turns to do fly pasts (at least 6 good views of them passing overhead). Both Tawny and Barn owls were also seen and as we came to leave two LEO were calling close by. And at one point a Cuckoo chipped in as well. Top evening.
