Close to getting divebombed again by 2 more curlews tonight, but what was more intriguing was 2 lapwings (and another close by) very angrily bombing and mobbing a crow.

Crows will take both eggs and young birds so the lapwings see them as predators and will mob them in the same way as birds mob raptors.

I have a rookery in the trees next door and at the bottom of my garden the lapwings and curlews moved in! I even had curlews in the garden!
They are continuously bickering with the crows, who used to live in the bit of wood/trees in the bottom field by the river. I always wondered why they moved...

Can anyone tell me what the call is in this short video (link to Instagram)?

instagram.com

I hear it quite a lot this time of year and have no idea what it is. I'm in Lewisham, SE London - zone 2 but quite leafy round here, with large gardens and lots of mature trees. The nearest river is about a mile away so although it almost sounds like some kind of duck or water bird I can't think it would be. (I checked out the coot and moorhen calls on RSPB but it doesn't sound like the examples they have on there.)

Today we saw a red-backed shrike in our local reserve. Seems to have been there all day.

I think there’s a spotted flycatcher that lands on the wall outside the bedroom window now and again. It’s not proving easy to get a photo of though.

I also spotted a tree creeper on one of the cedar trees outside my classroom window the other day.

Another first for me yesterday - 3 or 4 hopping around in the ferns. And unusually hiding in the base of the fern as we approached. Until we got too close, when they flew out

Sylvia Undata, aka Dartford Warblers, I hope!

Is this a female, or juvenile? Or something completely different? It wasn't posing in the best location

Oooo Exciting spot Um!

Just been treated to a low lever fly past by the local swifts. There were a group of five having a great swoop and game of chase down the road - face high pass by!!! Stood there for a very lovely minute or two being flown around 😀😀

Heard the long eared owls on my evening dog walk for the first time this year.

Was getting a little worried as hadn't heard/seen them yet this year whereas last year, it was nearly daily at this point. At least hearing them anyway. But where I regularly saw them last year was decimated by storm arwen and had loads of trees down.

They were in a nearby area so hopefully I'll spot them again in the coming weeks.
