How do birds differentiate between a squirrel and a cat? The ones in our garden seem to co-exist quite happily, other than the pigeons can't intimidate the squirrel, and a lot closer than they'd ever get to a cat. Assuming they want to live.

Our birds tend to tolerate the squirrels because they know they scatter peanuts. At one point one of the magpies would follow them around and dig up the nuts they just buried.

@steve, I wondered when your woodpigeons would start their mass migration over the Severn.
I've been talking to the ones in our local fields asking them if they'd join their fellows in South Wales, to no avail though 😁
Ours are flocking together, but in the tens, rather than the thousands!

Love the jay picture.
Curlews calling on my evening run tonight, very spooky in the dark with the wind and rain

That is a great jay pic; moody blue backdrop - fab.
Glad you posted about pigeons, Steve. I dropped in here to see if anyone was talking about them - many groups/flocks flying around in Bristol and South Glos today.
