I love the autumn mixed flocks of tits. I was out in the garden just now and a little flock of long-tailed, great and blue tits came down to the feeders, seep-seeping around me.

On a run through a wooded nature reserve today, saw quite a few of these tied to trees, about 4ft off the ground, roughly 2in square and 8-10 ins long. They seemed to be empty, unless anything hidden at the far end, and not spring loaded or spiked in any way. For birds? For small tree living things? Something beneficial? Or rat/mouse/other poison at the far end? Any ideas? |

We found the answer ... not bird related. Either nest boxes for dormice, or dormice surveys. Seems the tubes can be used for both. eg ecologypartnership.com |

I was blaming the squirrel for burying acorns just below the surface down the garden the other day but on watching Autumnwatch last night I realised that it must be the jay that's been popping in and rummaging around down there recently.

We had a jay the other day too - although it's still mainly the squirrels doing the burying round here.

Fantastic river walk, greylag geese, curlews, Dunlin, redshanks and bar tailed godwit. Highlights some great murmurations from the lapwings though. Absolutely stunning at this time of year. A spectacle that never fails to give me a lift
