J2R, yeah, Goldfinches have increased everywhere and it's good to see them so often now in my garden. House Sparrows are currently few and I haven't seen a Starling in my garden for over a year. As for Corncrake...wow..fantastic. Only ever seen a dead one; forty years ago or so on a road here in Cardiff.

saw a blackbird seeing off a jay today. quite comical, given the size difference. i guess the jay was out looking for eggs or nestlings for tea.

steve45, we're one of the gardens blessed by starlings (they nest in the eaves next door). Fascinating birds.
Never seen a corncrake in this country, only one I've ever seen was in Estonia a few years ago. I'd driven up to this national park area where they are reasonably abundant, but hadn't seen one until we were just leaving, when one ambled across the road in front of us. I pulled over and got out and followed it on to the verge, filming it with my mobile phone from a few feet away. It didn't seem the slightest bit bothered.

We had starlings nesting in last year's GSW hole.

Starlings used to nest in my eaves when I was a child, they were really noisy and made a right mess. My parents are bird lovers (my dad is now a proper twitcher) but we really weren't fans of the starlings, and apart from murmuations I still fell the same!

A trip to Llanelli yielded a few for my lifetime list: linnet, stonechat, rock pipit, marsh tit, also added pochard for this year's list. 109 now of the hoped for 200 for the year. Inevitably a couple of others that I got excited about (some weird looking heron and a pale coloured wagtail) that turned out to be juveniles.

Another one that I think there is no chance of seeing in Leicester.
