We've been 'house hunting' for three days. We need more space, would like a bigger garden than our current home, but crucially there must be curlew, oyks and lapwing close by heart

Not huge. They have grey wings with black wing tips and a white head.

My experience of Norway is that there are lots of common gulls there. Despite the name, they're not that common here at all - black-headed, herring and lesser black-backed gulls are, I think, far more common.

Plenty of curlew and lapwings in North Wales Derby. Not sure about the oyks!

We get common gulls here around the dales and Bronte country in winter. They're like an elegant 60% sized gentle herring gull if that makes sense. I love meds, lbbg and commons

^ bonners, someone claimed they "had a big old owl come and sit in our tree every night". Tempting, but the parking situation wasn't great and there was a pressing need for a re-wire :-(

DT, interesting, never thought of common gulls as an inland bird. I have to say my favourite gull is the herring gull, simply because its call is the sound of childhood seaside holidays for me, very nostalgic!

common gulls just look so much friendlier than most other gulls.

we're also about to start house hunting in your neck of the woods DT, or maybe on the bottom edge of the Dales. Our criteria are similar, but with the addition of nearby access to decent trails/fells to train on and apparently a good nearby parkrun. Would help if there was also some employment of some sort!
