Saff Efrika update: The occasional ostrich(unsure how wild they were), a hawk over Langa township. Sparrows common(worldwide?) and plenty white collared African ravens and a plentiful type of starling. Ibis and spoonbill and a type of goose all seen anywhere wet. And in Kruger... ...eagles common! There's one every other mile! Snake(not the European one), African fish eagle (near a crocodile), others..... Vultures perched and circling. Methinks it was hooded vultures that were perched(not fully bare heads) and maybe massive whitebacked ones in the air. ...also Marabou storks circling mid air. Other smaller storks. A secretary bird.... Longtailed things - possibly tits or weavers? Red billed quelea. Rollers - like shrikes. Off to Durban today - the coast of Indian ocean....

Out cycling today I heard a corncrake! Never heard one before, but the sound was very distinctive and unlike anything I've heard before, so I've just checked online.

Used to be very fond of the sound of blackbirds but for the last few days our garden has been filled with the constant, ultimately rather tiresome, sound of blackbird alarm calls. A male blackbird has taken to bringing his 3 nearly fully grown chicks to the garden to feed them, and when one of our cats is out there (which is a lot of the time), the alarm call is incessant. Mind you, given that I've only ever seen the male, I can't rule out the possibility that one of the cats ate his wife, which is bound to make him more agitated.
