Yesterday's run along the Coast Road revealed a couple of buzzards, a wren, several cormorants, a bull finch and lots of wee brown things.

Today I saw a raptor hovering completely motionless in a stiff wind. Too small for a buzzard but bigger than a kestrel. As I was driving up a twisty road I couldn't get a good enough look.

Easy country run today. Flushed a couple of linnets from the path just in front of me, saw bullfinch, and a stoat scuttled across the road not far away. Also, whitethroats galore flitting from bush to bush, and lots of yellowhammers.

On the cuckoo subject, I've heard a lot more this year than I have in years. Don't know whether there's any significance in that. Conversely, I've heard far fewer willow warblers than I have in years - virtually none locally, in fact, which is very strange, and a little worrying. (Worrying because they're one of our summer visitors which overwinters in West Africa, where there are lots of changes afoot in land use).

I've barely heard a willow warbler too, although chiffchaff seem to be doing well :(:)

Travelling back from the Welsh Castle Relay today as a passenger saw several red Kites, buzzards and a kestrel hovering. Amazing with the red Kites that they haven't quite reached north Wales, yet go a few miles south and you spot them most days.

Down here in South East Wales Willow Warblers are more abundant (it seems) than in recent years but there's a lull in all singing birds here generally now.
Loads of blossom/flowering was/is earlier this year then last..buddleia is flowering about two and a half weeks earlier!

Willow Warblers seem to be as common as ever round here, and I've heard a few cuckoos locally (as well as in the Lake District and Loch Lomond); I don't think I've heard any for the last couple of years locally, and before that, usually only one.

No Wood Warbler this year though.

Seem to be lots of Snipe and Redshank about too.

Singing birds noticeably quieter / fewer here too. Back to early / determined crowd: mistle, chiffchaff, wren and goldfinch. I've been out in North Notts tonight and heard as many williw warblers as I have all spring at home. Several broods of tiny mallard still around

Just back from the river where I saw a pair of buzzards flying over a field then a single raptor which was a red kite - never seen one this far south before! On the way out over the weir the turtle was out sunning himself then as I went back, my family of swans glided into the millpond. I was so pleased to see them as I haven't seen them since they hatched and all 7 babies were there. heart :)
