Tip for anyone visiting the lakes who has the misfortune of needing A&E services ... MrsG and I have needed to visit on a few occasions over the years and have only ever been aware of either Carlisle or Lancaster as our options (also the little cottage hospital in Keswick of course) but there is an Urgent treatment centre at the hospital in Kendal - its very annoying as the big red signs on the drive into the hospital state "NO A&E" however on the basis that most of us would visit for a broken bone / sprain / burn etc ..... run of the mill stuff these are the injuries the centre DOES do ......... After MrsG decided to head but a iron gate after tripping on a innocent lakeshore path we were in an and back out again inside 25 minutes - brilliant service.

Yes, my friend had a dislocated finger put back into place at Kendal last year. Not sure how long he was there for though. We'd parked in Grasmere for an OCT recce, and did joke that a good portion of the people there might be medically trained to help him. |

There always used to be an A&E at Kendal (Westmorland General to give the hospital its Sunday Name) but it was 'downgraded for efficiency reasons' some years ago - was quite handy a couple of times when the kids were growing up less than a mile away. I'll check next time I run past but I believe the Urgent Treatment Centre isn't open 24 hours. Pleased MrsG got seen quickly and that she's well again soon. Depending where you are in the Lakes, there's also A&E Services at Barrow and over on the west coast near Whitehaven (West Cumberland Infirmary) Naturally, I hope nobody has need of such services but knowledge can be helpful. |

I went into Lancaster A&E a couple of years ago with a swollen arm, having been sent there by the Keswick walk-in who suspected a clot (and who said Carlisle were worse!). Lancaster said it looked a bit strange, but 3 consultants had a look and none were sure what was wrong so I was sent home and asked to come back the next day. I didn't. I was heading home, so went into my local A&E next morning and within 30 minutes I was diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening DVT and on drugs to try and break up the clot. I'd have to be desperate to go back to Lancaster A&E! (and please don't let that be tempting fate!) |

That's not good to hear. I'm currently being treated by three different departments at Lancaster!
