Set off at 15:00. Hot until I got to Weatherlam summit, nice and breezy on top with good sun. Saw a few folk coming down then didn’t bump into anyone else till Brim Fell.

Son lives on Cumbria/Northumberland border and spends much of his freetime on the fells. However this week he's abandoned the Lakes for Norway. OK this isn't the Lakes but thought this group might appreciate this: Here he is on Trolltunga ( the trolls tongue). OK- not quite as isolated as this appears - there's a queue for this shot, but he says its absolutely stunning. |

Looking for advice. Going to have a couple of days in Lakes (and then Peak District). Coming from Scotland I’m used to just looking at a map and plotting a route without thinking about access. How do I know looking at OS map where I’m allowed to walk/bike??

You can legally walk on roads (obvs), bridleways and public footpaths, cycle on roads and bridleways, but not public footpaths. Info here: ramblers.org.uk You can also walk anywhere on "access land", but not cycle. There is a bit about how to recognise access land on an os map here, ramblers.org.uk Wild camping is not legal, but generally accepted in the Lake District as OK if you are above the highest walls. |
