It's not any better that he took his last jump knowing his silver was "secure".

The only reasonable decision here would be to reinstate him (and maybe also move up the lower jumpers one place, so there's a joint silver and then a bronze).

There's no "right" answer. If the field judges have now correctly judged it as a foul, he shouldn't be in the medal mix for a foul jump, no matter what the optics etc. But they shouldn't be allowed to get to a position where a simple decision on whether a jump is a foul or not is happening significantly after the event; in the plasticine days it couldn't have happened "late", so the fact that the tech and new rules allow for that to happen should be looked at. Maybe the French appealed the validity as it happened?

If it was the other way round and a fouled (but measured) jump was subsequently found to be valid, I think then awarding the medals to both the "new" medalist and the old ones makes sense. Won't happen very often, though I remember a javelin medal (or record?) being reinstated after a red flag as it was measured despite landing outside the marked sector. On re-measuring the sector it was discovered that the line was painted in the wrong place. Can't remember if that affected medals though.

It's also not any better that he could have finished second due to a foul and with it being his first jump, the whole comp is affected. It's all round bad really and shouldn't happen. Rather have the old rule than this, even if the new rule makes some sense.

We've been discussing it here. Raffo suggested a pressure sensitive strip (like blocks? I said) would register if any part of the sole/foot made contact. It's all bonkers when you think about it. There's no actual advantage if an 'airborne' bit of shoe is beyond the line. It really should be from the jumping part of the shoe. We don't jump from tippy toes!

Replacing the plasticene seems like using "technology" just for the sake of it.

So what if the tip of the toe was over the line and didn't touch the plasticene, it's the same rule for all and simple to enforce.

Ridiculous situation

Plasticine worked for that though Sharkie, the issue is the rule change.

There's no actual advantage if an 'airborne' bit of shoe is beyond the line.

Wait till Nike find a way ;-)

I'm sometimes ill informed but I heard one objection to plasticine was that LJ shoes were designed so the edge of the toe lifts up a bit (like sprint spikes) therefore it wouldn't imprint the plasticine. But when I said that to Raffo he insisted that would give no real advantage.

It's a technical advantage allowing them to get closer to the board I guess minimal but I get why you'd want the whole foot behind the mark, but not if it causes this issue.

I still can't see why the disqualification has happened.

People keep saying it's clear.

Which is bollocks.

The camera image is for TV. Not for measurement. It may not have been set up precisely along the line. Indeed it looks like it's not.

The protest and decision can then only be made based on this image. Which, see above, should be declared inconclusive at best.

If the laser line is set up correctly, then how that can be overruled by a dodgy image is beyond me.

If the laser line is set up incorrectly, then surely that voids the competition as we have no idea whether all the other athletes would have been affected and we just haven't seen a TV picture and use that to raise a protest.

It's not just the rule that's wrong here, it's the process itself that is both flawed and inconsistent.
