Thats's why unless the camera is perfectly straight along the line the image cannot be used.

And the camera is clearly not perfectly straight along the line.

The problem with the laser measurement is that there are two things in play - did the shoe cross the beam (1) and was the shoe still in contact with the ground at that point (2). So it will need a human eye to detect that in the absence of some clever tech to match things up.

No, that wouldn't work. If the rule is the vertical plane of the take off board cannot be broken whilst being in contact with the ground then plasticine doesn't help.

The new rule does seem to be solving a problem that didn't really exist, though it may be that WA / IAAF had some good data on toe creep above the 45deg part of the plasticine.

"The good news is that many of the criticisms may have been misplaced, given that most people were commenting on images shown on television or the internet from a broadcast camera that was not positioned at the same angle as the official measuring camera. The latter is calibrated to the vertical plane and, given this, the global governing body is confident the system can be trusted and is here to stay."

And that's exactly the point I was making.

The official camera/laser whatever said the jump was legal.

The protest was based on the TV images.

How can the latter overrule the former.

It's nonsense.

It doesn't overule, it just got them to check. Why are you assuming the official camera didn't show the foul?

Because the system checks at the point of the jump...

They've overrruled based on a TV image.....

My assumption is the auto system failed. There was a protest. A check was made and a foul confirmed.
