Cramp is imperfectly understood but I also thought we'd moved beyond linking it to nutrition. Hydration possibly but SURELY two elite athletes have that one sorted!

As for the LJ, the vertical plane rule is obviously bollocks and much harder to judge than just ground contact/pressure which is logical, easy to understand, simple to measure. If the tip of the toe is in mid-air over the plasticine at the point of take off, it's not providing any direct lift anyway, any more than the athlete's other foot and indeed entire body being in front of the foot at the point of take off!

I recall very difficult judgements with throwing events where it wasn't at all clear whether the shoe had made contact with the top of the barrier. They could put a plasticine strip there if they wanted, but it's rarely an issue.

the thing about that post 100m interview is that the vast majority of viewers (major champs viewers only, like me) won't know anything about any potential history between the runners (or not). whatever the truth of the matter, Neita came across as really miserable, especially as the other british runner (not DAS) was so buoyant at 'just' making the final. Neita won't have done herself any favours with the general public, though to be fair she might not be bothered with that.

Ho hum, anyone else see one of the UK's OTHER heptathletes doing fantastically well this morning? Lifetime bests for Jade O'Dowda in the HJ - also gives her PB in points accrued after two events. Nice work, Jade.

The interview is in the clip here

I agree with jda that the convention should mean medalist first but the interviewer presumed Neita wouldn't be quite happy with it which was correct (interviewer said frustrated, Neita said disappointed).

For Neita specifically, I wouldn't be surprised if it was just workload catching up with her. Third champs and with the semi being run earlier pre fatiguing muscles.

Neita is petty focused. She's come into these champs mentally in a pretty good place. I reckon she was mainly pissed off with having cramp so soon before her event when she knew how well she was running.

It's obvious press and and public are going to build up some sort of bad blood between her and DAS. Doesn't mean it's 'really' there.

GordonG casual viewer surely knows about expectations effect on how you feel about a performance and wouldn't have expected Bolt to be happy with anything but Gold.

It's the second time recently Neita has run marginally less well in the final (or semi final as opposed to heats - I haven't checked).

Only UK athletes have these three major champ to contend with this year if they wish to do so. Seems unlikely you can reach the same peak level for all three. There just isn't time.
