It looks pretty clear to me that if there was plasticine he'd have marked it. The new rule is about situations where you could cross the vertical plane with touching it at ground level.

I only saw a brief shot of it but it looked to me like the tip of the toe was over the line but in the air, not necessarily in contact with the ground (and so wouldn't have marked plasticine). But I'm not sure. In any case it's hard to see why it couldn't have been adjudicated more quickly.

You may be right, I saw the clip and thought it rolled through to touch. This shot suggests it may not have but still looks pretty clear. twitter.com |

Ok, here's the photo of the footage. twitter.com Is the camera set up directly on the line or is it slightly to the right to me? It looks like the latter.... If they are disqualifying on an image, it makes a mockery of the "official" measurement system. |

SPR - that line is *not* straight - the camera is clearly to the right of the line. That would make a *just* legal jump look over the line. To me, it looks bang on the line. |

I doubt they are doing it based on an image, that's just what we are getting. Hopefully we hear more but I think it's a foul and the issue is why and how it wasn't picked up initially.

If they're not doing it on the image and the laser system didn't trigger, then what is the protest based on? It *has* to be the image that the French team based their protest on. |

The French protest would be based on the image but actually I don't have much of an issue with it all being based on the image. I presume the camera is there for that very purpose.

My initial thought was that officials may have other means to review even if the protest is based on image.

Agreed, the image is enough for a protest, then it's up to the field judges etc to determine what they are / should be using to judge fouls. Still, there ought to be some means whereby decisions are considered final by the end of a round or within a certain period, especially for decisions which turn a good jump into a no jump. Imagine if he had chosen to pass the final jump once his silver was "secure" (as the gold medallist did) based on that green light. At least the plasticine gave a clear and immediate answer. |
