Ofgem announces next quarterly cap on Friday - expected to go up by 9% bbc.co.uk I've been overpaying a bit over the summer in anticipation to build up a balance, so hopefully won't need to increase by DD |

I think I'd better have a look at some fixed tariffs.

I was looking for a new fixed tariff yesterday, but might need to switch as EON only do a £50 below cap offer. Need to consult Martin Lewis

Got the email from Octopus saying how much I saved during the free energy last week -2p! (Was on holiday so the difference between then and the normal usage was 0.02kWh... I fixed end of last month for a year with them (and it has no exit fees so if prices suddenly plummet I can change) |

I got £2.56 as was able to charge car and house battery, and have the immersion heater on - all of which I'd normally do on cheap rate overnight

"Average" bill to rise by 10 percent: theguardian.com This kind of reporting annoys me. What is an average household? I suppose the gist is that we should expect a 10-percent increase but is there a reason why they don't express this in unit cost? No gas in Muttley Mansions and electrickery is just under 30p per unit so I guess Octopus will bump it up to about 33p. |

Yes, I think you can assume 10% rise for an "average" bill must be 10% rise in unit cost (or combination of unit and daily standing charge). That latter bit means it's more than 10% rise for me. Because we spend more on the daily standing charge than we do on the unit cost (because we minimise use of inbound electricity esp at peak times) the standing charge is a bigger proportion of our bill than for most people. So increase in standing charge is a big increase in our bill. We're not "average" household! ![]() |

I just logged onto Octopus and was offered the 'free electricity' hours so I've now signed up for that. I went to look at a fixed tariff but can't bring myself to sign up for a tariff that's more expensive than I'm paying now but would be less than the predicted 9-10% increase. I'll hold off for now and reconsider in a couple of weeks. |
