"If I had a house with a front garden, and turned it into a driveway by adding a dropped curb and paving it, the increase in house value (less the cost of the work) would be enough to buy an electric car!"

Doubtful.

And an stupid thing to do.

Have a driveway by all means. But the loss of front gardens in the UK is one of the key causes of localised flooding (and eventually downstream water management issues) because people have simply paved over entire front gardens and the water runs off, whereas previously it would have soaked into the gardens.

We should be restoring front gardens as a matter of importance, because as our weather gets warmer and wetter this will become more of an issue

Two friends in SE England have added 25k to their house value doing exactly that this year fozzy. And of course if they had a nice electric car they could charge it on their driveway too.

I am aware of the flooding implications, my current property was flooded 7 years ago and I get one or two alerts every month.

So, what's worse long term. Keeping an ICE and not swapping to EV, or paving 10ft of garden?

Shows the idiocy of the SE England housing market.

A quick google search has shown £25k to be at the more extreme end of things. My survey seems to suggest £5-10k is perhaps a more reasonable average estimate.

But it's still stupid to pave your entire front garden and turn it into a car park.

Btw - those estimates are for adding a *driveway* - not paving over your entire front garden to turn it into a car sales lot.

What's needed are hyperlocal semi-autonomous multilevel vehicle parking/charging cuboids.

I also think it's crackers to be driven by "what will increase my house price the most"

Craven, shortsighted and simply quite frankly a boring way to live your life being obsessed with endlessly making more money.

Convert the surplus hot air on the politics thread into electricity and charge cars wirelessly.

"Convert the surplus hot air on the politics thread into electricity and charge cars wirelessly."

Show me a prototype and we can talk.

Wet hot air is, of course, the basis of all thermal power stations...
