Lol at improved public transport. More than one bus a day!

Automated vehicles are a public transport replacement for the affluent in the cities and suburbs. I can’t see any automated vehicles waiting in my village for a pickup as the algorithm will no doubt direct them to a densely populated area!

I think TMW, WW and myself make fair points. This is kind of in a microcosm where we are now politically. All of us here seem well disposed to electric cars, but there's vary degrees of obstacles thrown in the way, some bigger than others. Yet we're arguing with each other it seems.

We need instead of waving our hands around and going "but climate change, we must do now" come up with some practical ways of flattening those obstacles, because many of those less well-disposed/patient will simply ignore. The countryside can be 10-20 years behind the towns. It's the same with alternatives to oil boilers...

"where additional digging up of pavements would be needed to create capacity."

Which is what will happen.

"so lampposts, bollards, under pavement conduits, chargers in communal carparkrs for flats etc etc all need deploying."

Yep, plus other solutions we haven't thought of yet.

Access to Electricity in urban areas is easy - the final delivery mechanism is where the innovation is required.

"I can’t see"

Don't need to see. It *will* be.

"The countryside can be 10-20 years behind the towns"

This is an issue in many cases.

The biggest barrier to EV adoption is cost. And that will fall as they become more widespread. Will the wealthier be the earlier adopters? Yes, that's already happened.

All the other trivia are details - important details yes - but details. There will be solutions - some widespread, some bespoke.

And then AEVs will wash the rest of the issues away.

And everyone who turned their gardens into car parks will look stupid (which is one reason why I'm turning the car park the previous owners of my house made into a single driveway and a garden again)

Right, so when I first had my smartphone its battery didn't last more than a few hours of constant use, I'd have to take a charger with me everywhere because it had a proprietary charging port. Now the phone I have can be put on a pad and get power from that, with no wire connecting to it. And I can do that at my brother's house, where his phone is of a completely different make.

Obviously *right now* you can't scale up wireless charging into electric vehicles, but it really isn't in the realms of impossibility that as technology improves, it might just become possible?

They've tried wireless charging with busses. Doesn't work that well - better to have a direct connection.

Not saying it won't be a solution for some, but the induction method seems to be quite inefficient for faster charging.

If I had a house with a front garden, and turned it into a driveway by adding a dropped curb and paving it, the increase in house value (less the cost of the work) would be enough to buy an electric car!
