Glad it went ok McG. I hope she's a bit more receptive to and appreciative of the help when she gets home.

Let's hope so. It was the first night of 24/7 care last night and the carer reported that MiL was being particularly difficult. She was probably very worried about today, so we'll see how it goes through the recovery phase.

Hope all is well with MiL, McG. How is DiL coping? Has it disturbed him or has he just accepted it all?

He's not massively functional to be honest. Most days he gets up (eventually) and only moves from his chair when he's told it's a meal time. He doesn't really say much but he's not got much idea where or when he is.

That’s tough McG. I’m glad the op went ok and hope she settles down with the care.

It might have to be a blog, she's home now but it has not been smooth sailing.

The hosp had said they wouldn't do the op untill she had confirmed 24/7 care for her and FiL. That was sorted. Okay, good.

However, post-surgery, the hospital are dispensing the various meds she'll need so she can be discharged and then mention - for the first time I might add - that she will need to self-administer daily injections. She's 86 and unable to self-administer a cup of tea and a biscuit. She absolutely cannot be injecting herself. And it turns out the carer we have hired is not allowed to give injections. But in fairness, she wasn't expecting to.

Very last minute dot com, it has been arranged that the district nurse will call in daily to do the injections.

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
