SB - you might not want to look at these 20 reasons to vote independence in that case *jono* to return to your status quo point - something that hasn't been brought up in the news is the fact that after a No vote the UK government want to change the way block grants are allocated to the regions. It's well known that we in Scotland get more than the rest of the UK, but they don't mention the fact that we contribute even more than that. All parties want a change to a 'needs based' distribution. Who's going to calculate those needs? Given the way they've led this argument and the great resentment in the rest of the UK at us getting more money through the Barnet formula, it shouldn't be a surprise that this will mean a cut in the block grant to Scotland. Probably to the tune of around £6 billion per year. That and the £25 billion of cuts that George Osbourne is planning and that Labour have confirmed they would also continue, there cannot be a status quo. Scottish government has been able to mitigate the worst of the cuts imposed on us, but they can't keep on doing it and eventually some hard decisions will have to be made. So do we want to privatise the NHS up here like they have in England? That would just be the start. These are not decisions made in the best interests of Scotland. |

I agree daviec, its seems unfair to levvy spending restrictions on Scotland, wales, N Ireland from westminster - however I still beleive that very hard economic choices will have to be made by a future Scotish administration. Financialy - Wales / N.Ireland present avery different financial picture. I think many people south of the border see the Scotish government able to offer free higher education places, do away with toll bridges etc and wonder were the money comes from - more indepth economic arguments go over their (and my own) heads. |

"however I still beleive that very hard economic choices will have to be made by a future Scotish administration" Spot on. But I'd rather we made those choices ourselves based on our own priorities than leave it up to Westminster. |

Going back a few pages, generally in elections there is a long period where the election has essentially been decided, and then some fluctuations around that number. If you believe that it will be a 56/44 split, there have been very very few opinion polls which aren't consistent with that split, and they have suggested the Yes vote will win by more. If you look at what polls were predicting after the election result is known, you see much more stability than when people are making strong politically-charged interpretations during the campaign. It's been stable enough for long enough to suggest things aren't really going to radically change. I'd be surprised if Yes didn't get between 54% and 58% of the vote. Elections/referendums can often be predicted 8 months out and I don't see anything in the patterns of the polls to suggest this is otherwise. |
