1989: I do remember the Aussie openers going the first day of a test unbeaten. That was a bad series, and at home. We underestimated the Aussies, they proved to be a great side which it more of a shock. In hindsight the 'effort' looks better than it was because of what that Aussie side turned into. I'm sure we went close in a test or two?
I remember similar feelings of anger/frustration. I worked in a kitchen that summer, we had the Radio on livin out the full horror day by day.
If we go 5-0, and especially if we lose the next 2 as limply as the first 3, then I would still have this mob as out there alone as the worst.

5th test was the one where Taylor/Marsh went unbeaten on day one. The debut for big Malcolm Devon (copyright Lord Ted Dexter) although he was unlucky. We went into 1989 thinking the Aussies were dire and our big (but declining) guns would roll them over at home again. Instead, we went through seamers at a rate of knots - Foster, Jarvis, Dilley, Igglesden (!), Malcolm, Fraser, Radford... - trying to find one who could actually get Steve Waugh out, and opening batsmen all the while just waiting for a rebel tour to decimate us yet further. I was convinced by the end of the summer that his name was actually Gooch lbw b Alderman.
The only players to come out of that series with credit were Robin Smith, Jack Russell and Gus Fraser.

If memory serves me right, 1989 from an aussie point of view, a result of what happened in 1985 and 1986/7, we smashed them, and that's when Border siad enough's enough....we may have to do the same.

Ah yes, time for the Gooch's answerphone gag
'This is Graham Gooch, terribly sorry I can't answer the phone, but I'm out... probably lbw Alderman'

Yes, good shout in 1989 - Aussies had got licked previous couple of series, and Border copped a lot of flak for being too nice and pally. There was a very different atmosphere around the 89 tour. Similar story really with this Aussie side and Pup's attitude.
A quick wiki of the 89 tour and I can't say we got close in any test - think the first was heading for a draw but we folded dramatically, then there was a revolving door of seamers, including Igglesdon and Phil Newport. Looking at the scoreboards actually taking all 10 Aussie wickets was a rarity, most ended with a declaration or the win.
Biggest margin of defeat was an innings and 180 runs. In other words had we batted 3 times, we'd have still lost by an innings.
Marvelous stuff!

2006-7 was also abject. A number of players who Fletcher hung onto despite being past their sell by dates. Hmmm, maybe a recurring theme!

I don't think there'll be many changes at all.
1988 was also a shocker for us, albeit against a formidable WI - 23 players and 4 captains!

Then relief at the end of that summer with a win against what looks like a weak SL, then it looks like there was NO winter tour? Have I forgotten something? A cancellation for some reason?
