Boycott in the torygraph today is suggesting that Pietersen has been allowed to play the way he wanted because he has won matches for the team but now he thinks Flower should give the ECB an ultimatum to the effect that either Pietersen is axed or he goes.

I guess Monty will play the next match now Swann has retired from all forms of cricket mid-tour.

Good on Swann. Been a true great, and stepped aside when he knew he didn't have it any more.

What happens if all the other longtime stalwarts decide to quit mid-tour?! I assume he knew he wasn't needed, but seems an odd time to go, even if the Ashes are 'over'.

I wonder if Swann had been told he was to be dropped, I guess so. Probably thought "stuff this I'm not taking wickets, the series is over I'll have Christmas at home." Who can blame him?
Monty will obviously replace him at least in the short term. It's funny but since England decided Flower would concentrate on just the test team things have declined. Maybe they have too much time to be anal about dietary needs and the state of the pitches. If KP plays in the 4th test I'd like to see taking the fight to Australia from the first ball.

Did think some of the subtext of what Swann was saying was 'and I've had enough of KP too'.

Whom would you have selected ahead of them? I don't see anyone else who could be picked. Briggs is no where near ready, Rashid has not performed in the past couple of years, Kerrigan was a disaster when selected in the summer.
Tredwell is a proven county and county performer and both he and Panesar are better bowlers than than Nathan Lyon. Borthwick has played one-dayers, hasn't he? And he'd be out there anyway with the one-day squad, so it's a sensible option as cover - he's unlikely to play. They'll pick Tredwell and Panesar for the final test at Sydney, but only Panesar at Melbourne.
