Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I currently get around the charge for our garden waste collection by putting it into the ordinary domestic waste bin as I very rarely fill it with 'normal' rubbish.

Knowing that until I am served with a Section 46 notice under the Environmental Protection Act 1990; they can do sod all about me doing this as they have a duty to remove all waste generated at my property

I don't find the bma guidance on triage reassuring for those who have a chronic condition and/or disability. Apparently a simple 'cut-off' policy cannot be used for age or disability, but you have to have the 'capacity to benefit quickly', which is open to interpretation by the hospital ethics board and/or doctor (or other health professionals) treating you. You might also be triaged based on relevance to the fight against the pandemic. Sounds like a recipe for indirect discrimination.

bma.org.uk

I feel sorry for medical professionals having to make these decisions, especially about withdrawing treatment, which must be heart-breaking.

I guess medics make these decisions whenever there’s a major incident eg train crash / terrorist event

But making it every hour for weeks must be horrid.

I wonder if the impact Covid19 has on NHS workers (who must be more likely to die than me sitting at home by the nature of their job) versus the major impact they are having to save lives will encourage or discourage the schoolchildren of today into medicine?

Can you not smuggle all the garden waste out in your trousers, like in The Great Escape?

£460 for a Bosch shredder. Not really practical suggestion and not sure it would be classed Asan essential purchase.

I would advocate buying the best shredder you can afford Baz. Ours will take up to 1 inch diameter branches and has been fantastic. Small stuff goes to compost, big stuff shredded. All we have to dispose of are the pernicious weeds.

It might not be an essential purchase Baz but you may be helping to keep someone in a job who probably has to work.

Larkim - yes, you must be weird liking the smell of bonfire smoke ;-) I hope you don't breathe it in too deeply because -

bonfire wood smoke contains several toxic harmful air pollutants including benzene and formaldehyde.

Other health threats from smoke come from fine particulate matter which can get into your eyes and respiratory system, where they may cause burning eyes, and respiratory illnesses, such as bronchitis.

These fine particles can make asthma symptoms worse and trigger asthma attacks, as Weath observed.

Given that this virus attacks the lungs I will be staying away from any sources of smoke and hoping our neighbours don’t go crazy with their fire pits when it gets a bit warmer...

@flatlander I like the smell of most pollutants, bizarrely. Toast for me has to be black to taste best. Living life on the risky edge!
