Apart from doing it at half term when schools were already shut. Now it will be more painful, less effective and illness rates are substantially higher... But of course that would have required a bit of leadership and foresight, not things the govt are noted for. |

This story (admittedly about a yet to be reviewed pre-print of a study) suggests that summer holidays in Spain were a big factor for the UK. theguardian.com |

It amazes me we were all being primed for it to happen either side of half term but then again lots of people said parents would want to do things with kids over half term. Boris also asked people to follow the new guidelines snd slow the spread but some brits have proved time & again they can’t be trusted. I could do with some time off but as I wfh life won’t change that much with exception of maybe being restricted to only exercising once a day. |

Moderate guidelines just aren’t enough. It requires massive reduction in contact to suppress the disease.

I and most of my friends thought that flying abroad for a holiday in the Summer was unnecessary and selfish. Why didnt the scientists and Government stop this? Oh well looks like November will be sat at my laptop all day and watching netflix the rest of the time. Deep joy. |

Seems as though this virus is out of control more so than in March but I must be use to it all because I feel less scared now than then. I will continue to follow the rules and modify my behaviour to reduce the risk but I am not sure many others will. |

A fake lockdown isn't going to do a whole lot. What exactly can you do in tier 1 that you can't do in tier 3 or any tier 4 they are yet to invent for a new attempt at lockdown? Go to the pub or coffee shop seems to be about it, and buying things other than food from places which are not Amazon. Schools and colleges will remain open, university students will remained locked in halls, workplaces will remain open, offices will remain open, people working from home will carry on doing so. Only thing I see changing is that by removing opportunities to socialise outside you then have more people socialising inside. That doesn't seem like an improvement. |

I am in the frankly ludicrous situation of meeting my parents in a cafe today. It will be a cramped location where we are closer to my parents and various other punters than if we had them to my own home. Quite possibly the most risky situation I will have been in since March but the rules allow and in fact encourage this.
