I tended to WFH if I could if I have even a cold to stop the spread. My last line manager supported that but not many did. I just hope that happens in future. That said our operations staff who can’t do cause a fuss as we should be off sick if we’re too ill to go to work and we’re already trying to work around how to deal with a 2 tier work force operating different rules. One points under scrutiny is office staff can go on holiday self isolation is possible while WFH but the operators staff can’t. Will the business mandate all self isolation is done unpaid & not worked??? That would have huge implications on the running of the business. Much like the government trying to manage covid I’n glad I’m not making decisions on such things. |

I think thats just something that people need to accept although it may seem unfair, If your job allows WFH and you can work while isolating then thats good. People shouldnt be paid to isolate. Unfortunately some staff who cannot WFH will fine this is a problem and yes it does appear unfair. Sadly though it is what it is and people will have to make a tough choice. I recall I once had a manager when faced with staff complaints of unfairness who would say 'if you dont like it, you know where the door is !!!'. That manager wasnt popular funnily enough, but at the end of the day he was right and the issue was the smokers didnt like the restrictions that stopped them popping out for a fag on a regular basis. |

I know some employers offer the option of "buying" more holiday entitlement, maybe that would be an option, or just doing their best to make it a covid-safe work environment. Strong encouragement not to come in when sick being the main part of that.

Bob!
At the local council where I work we have been advised that any isolation due to travel rules must be taken as part of your Holiday allowance or as unpaid leave

Same here Bob, also the same for another friend who works in a different local council, my husband who works for a different public sector organisation, and one of my friends who works in the private sector. I’m sure that rule will be imposed by a lot of employers, those are just a few examples that I’m aware of.

Totally agree Bazo if I got a requirement to self isolate due to contact I have to work operators are sent home with pay so it’s swings and roundabouts. We used to be able to buy leave but covid has had that squashed maybe it will come back maybe it won’t. I can guarantee if I had to quarantine after a holiday and it was unpaid I wouldn’t log on but I know working it would be expected. (I’m up for an extra 2 weeks off work even unpaid would be amazing!) |

(But I get that wouldn’t be feasible for many and I worry it brings in a richer v poorer situation)

Sorry to hear that you've set yourself back LN. Take as long as you need. I vaccinated a seventeen year old yesterday who has long Covid having had a very mild illness over a year ago. Being double vaccinated may mean you don't get big sick with Covid but it doesn't mean that you can't get long term debilitating illness on a level that doesn't happen with the flu. |
