Further reading suggests that the average age of those on the trial was only 31 - young people tend not to get seriously ill and die. So a badly designed trial, and not sure now whether we can infer anything meaningful ?

Are we going to get to the point where people turn up at doctors and ask for a certain flavour vaccine? Will they get told tough buttons it’s x or nothing? I’ll take what I’m given I was just interested.

Now best part of seven weeks since I have been allowed to sit in a humble cafe, or go into a non-food shop. Still 'onside' for now, but patience starting to wear a little thin.

Can you combine the old and potential new AZ vaccine in 1 jab for the future?

I dunno, but the flu vaccine seems to protect against multiple viruses:

Traditional flu shots are trivalent, or three-component, vaccines. This means that they protect against three viruses: two influenza A viruses, H1N1 and H3N2, and one influenza B virus.

The specific viruses in an annual shot depend on which are likely to circulate during that year’s flu season. Researchers make this prediction.

The influenza viruses contained in the trivalent 2020–2021 flu vaccine are:

the influenza A virus H1N1, also known as the Guangdong-Maonan strain
the influenza A virus H3N2, also known as the Hong Kong strain
an influenza B virus known as the Washington strain

It's a curious and interesting fact that the number of "cycling helmet saved my life" stories vastly exceeds the number of people who ever used to die from head injuries while cycling.

On a related matter, the Isles Report found that seatbelt legislation was not associated with any reduction in deaths and serious injuries on the roads. Its publication was suppressed for several years due to the inconvenience of the results.

I haven't read into it but I don't see how we can have any confidence that the AZ vaccine protects against serious illness with the SA variant when it was tested on 2000 young people and isn't effective against mild illness which is what we'd expect them to have anyway.

None of the vaccines prevent mild illness occurring if you catch any covid variant.
