Thanks Geordiegirl. Hope both the marathon and op go well, when they come round. I've not tried exercises as the pain isn't too bad - it's more the blisters that come from the big toe rubbing against the second toe and the sore skin under the bunion itself when running, and after. |

Hello All, sadly joining the bunion club. Some may be aware as I have talked ad infinitum about my right foot and the grief it has been giving me with blisters, pain etc. I've had orthotics off the shelf and custom but none of them have helped long term, the best ones for relieving the pain and allowing me to at least run 10k I believe have actually made things worse or sped up what was happening as they have a cut out underneath the big toe joint where it meets the foot. I don't know if my toe joint was headed into bunion territory anyway but this lack of support under the joint has IMO allowed the joint to collapse and the bones to twist. My foot looks almost normal most of the time with just a small amount of swelling to the joint but I started to notice the toe itself sort of facing the wrong way (to the outside) after running. Then when I tired curling my toes the big toe went sideways under the second toe and the joint also went sideways. I also found that during heel raises i could lift the big toe, it isn't doing anything and again the joint collapses sideways a little bit. Then with my toes bent forward, as if toeing off, if I put my hand underneath he toes and press the toes into the hand if I press with all the toes there's a small sideways movement of the joint but if I mostly press with my big toe the joint shoots sideways quite a lot. So I think when I am toeing off that's when I have the most issue with the side of my foot encountering the inside of the shoe and getting rubbed, blistered calloused etc. It's also majorly freaking me out, I can't look at and I have had to cover it in tape. I have taped it in such a way as to try and keep the toe straight and stop the joint from collapsing sideway although I don't think that's actually possible. I have also tweaked my insoles (which provide arch support) so there is raised support under the joint to encourage it to stay where it should, I don't know if this will help. I wear mens shoes for the wider fit and roomier toe box and wear a size up and I do exercises to try and strengthen my feet, is there anything else I can do? I've seen 2 podiatrists so far and I don't exactly have a good experience of that, is it worth seeing another and seeing if there are orthotics that can be made to support that joint and toe and stop it from dong the whole sideways thing? I don't want it to progress to a point that it's like it permanently??? Thanks and also if you read all of this well done, quite an essay, sorry |

Only just spotted you had posted this Runningbauble21 I feel for you I have tried forever to help my toe/bunion to no avail. I believe my physio thought that when I broke my 2nd metatarsal a few years ago it allowed the bunion to form more but also that the bunion may have put extra pressure on the 2nd metatarsal (I had a previously undiagnosed stress fracture) which led to it breaking. I have always found podiatrists of no use as they want you in orthotics and when I've tried them I've found no benefit and they don't seem to believe in strengthening the feet. Can you get a referral to see a surgeon? My biggest problem is the deformed toe joint the extra padding under the joint and the upper foot bulge blistering. I need to find the letter from my surgeon and see if I can get an idea when I may get booked for surgery. Fingers crossed you find some relief/support soon. |

Hi geordiegirl I think I might be having some success with the little wedge I have added to my insoles and the excessive taping to try and stop the toe, joint and metatarsal loving and twisty so much. I'm not celebrating yet but it does seem more comfortable, hopefully it will stay that way and not progress anymore. Surgery would be too debilitating for me even if someone would consider it when I have no pain in everyday life. I have identified a surgeon though, just in case and as he is specifically and podiatric surgeon who also does biomechanics etc he might be worth talking to if I can get to him. He works in the same hospital as me so hopefully he will want something IT related soon and I can can an intro ![]() I hope you manage to get your surgery done soon, fingers crossed |

I have booked an appointment with a recommended foot man to discuss what's going on and what might help. The little wedge had unexpected consequences, strained butt muscle I think ![]() Anyway, 8th March I'm seeing him. He's a podiatrist turned surgeon so hopefully can offer some advice or orthotics that will actually support my foot and prevent me needing surgery in the future, fingers crossed |

Sorry the wedge didn’t work out for you it’s a minefield one little thing can have such an impact. Good luck with the surgeon. I’ve wrote to mine (as the GP said they can’t get involved 😩) to see where I am on waiting list. |

Thanks geordiegirl the annoying thing I think it's on the right lines but just too much and I've put myself out of action a bit which is annoying. I hope you get a response from your surgeon soon and you're near the top of the list! |

I have got my appointment!! 31st January all being well. I am feeling a tad nervous now... but it is 5 weeks away, so time to get prepped and nicely timed as I do have a busy January. Did you get any advice @Runningbauble21? |

I did see someone and he confirmed my issue is toeing off, so I don't do that now and I can run as far as I want or as far as my knees will let me 😊 I did get sent to an orthotics man too but I haven't managed to wear the orthotics he made, they injure me so I'm sticking with off the shelf insoles and running differently. Good luck for your op |
