I have a bunion on left toe and osteoarthritis. Wear hokas wide fit women's or standard fit men's(up a full shoe size and use lace locking). Managed for 2 years with custom made orthotics. Now though running further and faster- being plagued by v nasty blistering of big toe

Saw consultant yesterday who advised:
Removal of bunion
Removal of degenerative cartlidge(?spelling)
Replacement of this cartildge with a special membrane
Drilling of small holes in big toe joint
Want it done asap- but when he quoted £7000 for nuffield-am afraid I can't afford this. He dictated a letter when I was there. Letter to go to GP and referral to NHS to be made by GP. Name of surgeon recommended also in letter.

Oh my word NRGEE that looks so painful. Mine is right foot and has a habit of blistering on the top it can also blister between big & 2nd toe. The hospital said the bunion likely contributed to the full break of my 2nd metatarsal a few years ago (had a precious stress fracture)

The consultant for the bunion suggested some gel pads for under ball of my foot and I found these Foot Pads, Ball of Foot Pads, Breathable Foot Cushion Pads, Ball of Foot Cushions, Metatarsal Pads, Forefoot Cushion Pads for Women and Men, Great for Foot Pain Relief, Mortons Neuroma(2 Pair)

They have helped me but running in vibrams the fabric stretches and is perfect but the bunion is wearing holes in the side of the shoe! So currently trying to repair those.

I hope you can get your NHS referral, when you know what the treatments cost it really makes you appreciate our NHS. Keep me posted and hopefully there’s a bit less of us soon

I updated the other thread not this one.

Had a call with hospital today and booked in for 8th November for surgery. Excited, hopeful but when you read the horror stories a little scared.

I’m going to call my physio for some pre and post surgery recovery advice.

I'm wondering this, too, geordiegirl and . If you have anything to add it would be useful to hear.

I was booked for surgery last year but cancelled at the 11th hour (I have an issue with anaesthetic that they knew about and then decided I needed to be in a hospital with full support not a day centre) so waiting for a reschedule hopefully next winter as I have a desert marathon coming up in April and can’t afford the time out. Wish it was done though.

But yes all being done NHS speak to your GP who should be able to refer you. Good luck.

Thanks for the update, GG. Not from there specifically, LW, but I believe exercises can help relieve pain, though not get rid of the bunion itself.
