Not only time, but it's difficult to read a book like that in bed. Or indeed anywhere, except on a desk/table. Just finished Sophie's World and am now going to re-read The Promise and then put some sort of a review on the relevant thread. Anyone else know Sophie's World? It appears to be aimed at teenagers (Sophie being 14 when the story starts, 15 when it ends) but I think many teenagers wouldn't persist with it since it encompasses (indeed, largely consists of) a whistle-stop tour through the history of philosophy, starting with Pythagoras and ending in the early twentieth century (it was first published in 1990). |

I recall a very earnest schoolfriend of son1's recommending Sophie's World to anyone who would listen. Her earnestness rather put me off but if Columba likes it maybe I should give it a go! I have ordered The Miracle of Castel di Sangro (secondhand copy) and have added The Caravaners to my wish list. I may be suggestible but I'm afraid I am still resistant to sci-fi |

I didn’t like Sophie’s world much, ground to a halt about 3/4 of the way through. I suspect it was a bit over my head

Nice post Badgo. I didn’t read the second volume of Night’s Dawn because it was staring to get very silly. I liked Sophie’s World. Sue read another of his and liked it faintly. She’s reading the first in that Zola series at the moment and hating it very much. |

The wonderful Ukranian author Andrei Kurkov (he of Death and the Penguin), has penned this missive from Kyiv. newstatesman.com I didn't know about Grey Bees, but that very much seems like my kind of book. I've recently read next to no fiction (Kunzru's Gods without men is the one exception), but for Kurkov I will make an exception. |

The Promise is getting better and better. It’s full of surprises.
