Just finished "Shuggie Bain". I thought it was one of the best books I have read in quite a while.

I'm about half way into The Promise and, as always, I am greatly enjoying Columba's choice. I've also begun When We Cease To Understand The World. I found this began at a hundred million mph and jumped all over the place in the first chapter. It's settled down a bit now.
I also bought The Miracle Of Castel Di Sangro which has been on my radar for more years than I care to remember. I think it was Linds who reminded me about it recently. I'm going to take it on holiday with me, and I'm also going to try and get J to read it as he never reads outside of school.

I like the sound of that - I assume a passion for football isn't necessary to enjoy it?

It seems not, from the comments I've read.

I’ve just finished The Call Of The Wild - a very quick and enjoyable read from 1903 - it’s made me give my dog more hugs 🤗
Next I’m lining up American Pastoral by Philip Roth. I read American Rust several years ago and seem to remember I quite enjoyed it.
Side project is No Logo by Naomi Klein - but reading a chapter here and there. Interesting stuff about the pervasiveness of branding over and above all else.

I loved American Pastoral. It starts with such energy and anger. My paperback also has a great cover.

I bought the hardback in 2000 after hearing a review on R4. I loved it so much I bought a copy for my mum, who also loved it. Since then I have recommended it far and wide and everyone who has read it has felt the same.
Of course there’s always the danger that someone just won’t like it especially after such fulsome praise. I reckon it helps if you appreciate football, but it’s not absolutely necessary- as with Fever Pitch. Not that it remotely resembles Fever Pitch. (Also loved at the time, obvs.)
