Do you think he would have to go back to the summit of Bowscale Fell to continue - or can he jog up the road to Mosedale and head straight for Carrock Fell?

I did NE and tbh that bit of his plan puzzled me. Personally I would have looked to continue on the route to Roundhouse and get picked up there. If anything it's shorter and quicker plus it advances you along the route. Even if you want to hole up in Mungrisdale you can get a lift back there, it's completely within the rules and a lot more efficient. I can see in the original plan why a CP at Mungrisdale made more sense because of the limited access to Roundhouse/Swineside but if all you need to do is get one 4x4 up there to bring you out then I'd have gone for that option.

I thought he went down the path rather than along the top and down the nose? It’s a pretty decent path, to walk *up* anyway

Rosehip that is what he did according to the tracker.

Assume he has to rejoin where he left off - which makes ff’s plan look much better
Did the weather roll in sooner than expected?

I wondered the exact same question this morning.

But who's to say the route couldn't be Bowscale Fell > Mungrisdale > Mosedale > Roundhouse, rather than Bowscale Fell > Roundhouse.

May not be what he planned, but it would still be a continuous route with no gaps. (He has summited on Bowscale Fell, I think?)

That was my thought too. As long as the tracker is accurate and there’s no reason to doubt it, he’s already summited and there are no rules as to which route you have to take.

He hasn't got to revisit to Bowscale. It just needs to be a continuous loop (at least in 3D if not 4D) and as Synge suggests if he chooses to go via Mungrisdale and Mosedale that is fine. As discussed earlier you can leave the route in a vehicle as long as you continue from the same point and there is precedence for going elsewhere to sleep on record rounds.

May not be what he planned,

Given the Mungrisdale CP was already on the tracker I think that was what he originally planned. Probably because as Simon pointed out one of his support team lives there.
