Other thing I wondered was was there lots of fresh snow on the leeward side from yesterday's storm, and they were avoiding certain slopes ?

Yep, that could definitely be a factor - they might just have been trying to avoid deep snow.
Talking of which, I bet it will be interesting going up Grizedale Pike in those conditions!

Finishing on those fabulous North Western ridges is fantastic. I can't think of a better set of fells to complete this on.
(I suppose a straight-line home run along the whole of the High Street range or the Helvellyn range might come close, but that would make no sense at all in terms of logistics!)

Heading down to Newlands Hause. Just the final section to Keswick left for what should be sub 8 and a half days. A terriffic effort that from the outside at least has looked calm and controlled throughout despite what was thrown at him. The way he handled Storm Barra was exemplary. Don't panic, don't pull the plug, develop a plan and be patient. Despite the time out I suspect the record may take some breaking. He moved at a good rate when the weather allowed (he was comfortably as quick as Tom) and showed fantastic resilience. Unless someone gets exceptionally lucky with a seven day weather window they are likely to have to deal with similar weather and do it as well as James did.

Agree with that, he's played a terrific hand.
I have been thinking about the circumstances that drove Tom to pull out and it must have been a finely balanced decision and not just one of how it was going on the fell. I know he was very concerned about how difficult it was going to be for his support team. In any event, I'd be surprised if he isn't watching all this with a tinge of regret.

Agree with that last line. Though he must have had in mind the potential of regret.
I remember Eoin Keith pulling out of the Spine Race one year and his consideration for the support crew and marshals. I think that consideration in the midst of an ultra is outstanding. The very same applies to Tom now to take care of everyone around him not just himself.

You only drop out of a race or challenge once and sometimes it is very borderline whether you’re right in making the decision. I can imagine some regret on Tom’s part but chapeau to James for good management, as well as just keeping going

All done now. Just the run in the now. Time to showboat 😀 I reckon with only slight detours you should be able get at least half a dozen pubs in between Catbells and the Moot Hall 🤣
